He has made truly epic runs across many of the world’s most extreme climates including the Sahara Desert, Mount Everest, the Inca Trail, and the Amazon jungle. In 2002 he became the first runner in the world to run a marathon at both the North and South poles and in 2009 he was the first athlete to run seven consecutive marathons on seven continents in less than seven days.

Mayo teens awarded certificates in youth leadership

Thirty-six Mayo teens have graduated from Foróige’s Leadership for Life Programme. The National University of Ireland Galway (NUIG) awarded the young people with a Foundation Certificate in Youth Leadership and Community Action last Saturday October 15. Two hundred and seventy young people in total graduated from the North and South of Ireland on Saturday having completed three modules in leadership. The programme develops the leadership capabilities and potential of young people and gives them an opportunity to harness their skills and attributes to contribute to their society in a fun and encouraging environment.

A team of Irish clinical academics have secured one of seven major awards that have been made across the UK and Ireland by Wellcome*. The scheme, which will be known as Wellcome – HRB Irish Clinical Academic Training Programme, will support the intake of eight postgraduate trainee doctors per year for a five-year period, providing fully integrated clinical and research training up to consultant level.
